Rajasthan’s character changes as you travel. Around Jaipur it is courtly and colourful, in the Shekhawati and Bikaner regions it turns quiet and arid, and around Jaisalmer it becomes open desert. This twelve-day circuit follows that change on a loop that begins and ends in Jaipur.
The centrepiece is the desert. After the fort and havelis of Jaisalmer you ride a camel across the Sam Sand Dunes at sunset and spend a night in a desert camp, with folk music and dinner under the stars. The journey then moves on to Jodhpur, Udaipur, Chittorgarh and Pushkar before returning to Jaipur.
It suits travellers who want the heart of Rajasthan and a real taste of the Thar Desert, and who are comfortable with a long road itinerary.
Your driver meets you on arrival and takes you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free. If you wish, an evening viewpoint such as Nahargarh Fort gives a first look at the city lights.
The day begins at Amber Fort, followed by a photograph stop at Jal Mahal and visits to the City Palace and Jantar Mantar. Hawa Mahal and the old-city bazaars complete the day, with textiles, jewellery and handicrafts on sale.
You drive about 170 km north to the Shekhawati region and the small town of Mandawa, 3.5 to 4 hours away. A walk through the lanes shows the painted havelis, whose gateways, courtyards and outer walls are covered in frescoes. The rest of the day is unhurried.
After breakfast you continue to Bikaner, about 195 km and 4 hours away. In the afternoon you visit Junagarh Fort, and later the Camel Breeding Farm and other sights, depending on time. The Karni Mata Temple at Deshnok lies about 30 km from the city, and shoes are removed before entering.
This is one of the longest drives of the trip, about 330 km across the Thar Desert, taking roughly 5 to 7 hours. An early start is recommended. On arrival in Jaisalmer the afternoon is at leisure.
The morning is spent in Jaisalmer Fort and its lanes, and among the nearby havelis. In the afternoon you leave for the Sam Sand Dunes, where you ride a camel across the sand as the sun sets.
You spend the night in a desert camp, with a cultural programme of folk music and dance, and dinner in the open air.
After breakfast you drive to Jodhpur, about 285 km and 5 to 6 hours away. On arrival you can wander near the Clock Tower and Sardar Market before dinner.
A morning visit to Mehrangarh Fort, ideally early to avoid the crowds, is followed by Jaswant Thada and Umaid Bhawan Palace. You then drive about 260 km to Udaipur, stopping at the Ranakpur Jain temples, which are open to non-Jain visitors from around midday.
This is a full day, and you reach Udaipur in the evening.
Udaipur’s City Palace, Jagdish Temple and the gardens of Saheliyon Ki Bari fill the day. In the late afternoon, an optional boat ride on Lake Pichola passes Jag Mandir. The evening is free.
After breakfast you leave Udaipur and stop at Chittorgarh Fort, a vast hill fort with monuments such as Vijay Stambh and Padmini Palace. The drive continues to Pushkar, where you arrive later in the day. This is a long day, so an early start helps.
In the morning you visit the Brahma Temple and walk along the ghats of Pushkar Lake. You then drive about 140 km to Jaipur, and the rest of the day is free for last-minute shopping.
After breakfast you are taken to Jaipur airport or railway station for your onward journey.
